What happens now?
Your orthodontic treatment and retainer supervision is now complete. You do not need to attend the practice for any more retainer checks
We recommend you follow the instructions provided by your Orthodontist to maintain your result
Retainer wear is for life and is your responsibility!
What should I do if I lose or break my retainer?
If your retainer is lost, broken or worn down please contact the practice immediately on 02887784827, delaying this may result in your teeth moving.
We recommend purchasing a spare set of retainers, please ask at reception for more details.
The longer you go without wearing your retainer, the higher the risk that your teeth will move. The new impression we take will hold your teeth in the position they are in that day, it will not move them back to their finished position.
There is a charge for replacement retainers that must be paid when you come in for the new impression.
Do I have to continue to wear my retainers?
Yes – retainer wear is life-long. You will need to wear your retainers for as long as your want to maintain your result
We recommend wearing your retainer for 12 hours every night
When you have completed the first year of retention post braces it may be possible to gradually reduce the number of nights you wear your retainers. Gradually dropping a night as each year passes until you might only have to wear the retainer once or twice a week to maintain tooth position.
If you feel the retainer is tight or uncomfortable after skipping some nights you may need to increase the number of nights until it feels more comfortable
You should expect your teeth to move if you stop wearing retainers. Changes in the position of your teeth can continue throughout life and are part of the normal ageing process.
