REMOVABLE RETAINERS ADVICE

What are retainers for?

When your orthodontic treatment is finished you will be given a retainer to maintain the new position of your teeth. It is really important your follow the advice given to prevent any tooth relapse/movement.

When should I wear retainers?

You should wear your retainers full-time for the first 24 hours after fit (take out for eating and drinking) then 12 hours every night.

Retainer wear is your responsibility!

Storage

  • Keep your retainers safe in a box when you are not wearing them – these are available to purchase at reception
  • Do not wrap your retainers in tissue as this is the most common reason they are lost or thrown into the bin
  • Keep the retainers away from dogs as the like to chew on them

Cleaning you retainers

  • Clean your retainers every morning using cool water, tooth paste and your tooth brush
  • We recommend using retainer cleaning tablets to keep your retainers fresh – these are available to purchase at reception
  • Do not use hot water to clean your retainers as this will melt and bend them out of shape

What should I do if I lose or break my retainer?

If your retainer is lost, broken or worn down please contact the practice immediately on 02887784827, delaying this may result in your teeth moving.

We recommend purchasing a spare set of retainers. Please ask at reception.

The longer you go without a retainer, the higher the risk that your teeth will move. The new impression we take will hold your teeth in the position they are in that day, it will not move them back to their finished position.

There is a charge for replacement retainers that must be paid when you come in for the new impression.

Retainer check appointment

Please bring your retainers to your post treatment retainer check appointment. This is usually 6/7 months after treatment is completed. If you have any concerns before this please contact the practice, do not wait to the retainer check appointment.

Dental work

If you are having any new dental work done, please bring your retainers to the appointment as there is chance this work may affect the fit of the retainers. The dentist may be able to check the fit for you.

Please contact the practice on 02887784827 as soon as possible to get an appointment if you need replacement retainers post dental work
