FIXED APPLIANCES ADVICE
Tooth brushing advice
- You should clean your teeth more often with fixed braces on; this includes morning, night and every-time you have something to eat
- Brush all around your teeth, along the gum-line, above, below and in between each bracket
- We recommend using a soft headed tooth brush in circular motions and inter-dental brushes with fluoride toothpaste
Diet advice
- You should avoid hard and sticky foods as these can damage your brace
- Foods such as apples, carrots, crusty bread should be cut up into small pieces
- Sticky or hard sweets such as toffees, hard mints or nuts should be avoided completely during treatment
- You must not drink fizzy drinks (including diet/zero), sugary, sports drinks or large amounts or fruit juice during treatment. These are very acidic and will damage your teeth
- Limit the frequency of snacking between meals
Will treatment be painful?
- It is likely to be sore for about 3 – 5 days each time the brace is adjusted
- If necessary, simple painkillers such as those you would normally take for a headache should help – please read the instructions on the packet/ask a parent
- If the brace rubs your lips or cheeks, you can use some orthodontic wax to help with this (available at reception)
- If you have a ulcer, apply gel such as medijel or anbesol (please check info leaflet for allergies)
